Radical Acceptance IS Freedom

We all hold firm to the ideas we've - mostly unconsciously - formulated that are essentially survival strategies. A few of these are important & useful throughout life; while most are just life lessons in various disguises.
    And
yet, our old dogmatic rules for life can keep us imprisoned in a tight little box, fearing that even examining & questioning them consciously is to risk death & eternal damnation. Of course it's far easier to see such rigidity of speech & behavior in others.
    We
might clue in to our own imprisonment whenever our anger is suddenly triggered, when we refuse to look deeper into, consider alternative ways of thinking about, or further discuss certain ideas. Religion, politics & personal finance seem to be common no-go zones - triggers for rigid little box certainties.

At the bottom of the page is imho Helen Hamilton's most valuable guide to help us experience freedom from unnecessary suffering.
    Fully
90-95% of our suffering is unnecessary because we unwittingly bring it upon ourselves by rejecting parts of reality we don't want, and by clinging to parts of reality that we do want. The mind only understands controlling our environment, even when it cannot be controlled - which makes no sense & of course causes prolonged, unnecessary suffering.
    Especially
those who've had a great deal of success controlling life using the mind, may find it very counterintuitive & almost impossible to shift from our common hyper-rational, head-centered operating system to a supra-rational (NOT irrational), spiritual heart-centered one. We may have to suffer needlessly, for a very long time before we allow ourselves to make this ESSENTIAL SHIFT.

As soon as we're ready to let go of fearful certainties, the spacious mystery of who / what we truly are & actual reality awaits!

"Try to be mindful, & let things take their natural course. Then your mind will become still in any surroundings, like a clear forest pool. All kinds of wonderful, rare animals will come to drink at the pool, and you will clearly see the nature of all things. You will see many strange & wonderful things come & go, but you will be still. This is the happiness of the Buddha."

Waking Up from the Trance

Many of us, without realizing it, bring our driven, perfectionistic energy to spiritual practices. For decades we may fail to realize that the goal of spirituality is not a perfectly-polished, shiny version of our personality nor even a consistently happy life - which are just goals of the ego. Who we think we are is as simplistically inaccurate as a stick-figure drawing of a human being, or humanity's conception of Divinity.

Eighty-three-year-old “teacher, author, & spiritual leader Gangaji, offers Sri Ramana Maharshi and Sri Poonjaji's radical invitation to stop the search for fulfillment & enlightenment and to fully recognize the truth of one's being, which is already completely whole and permanently at peace.
    Her radical invitation is to:
        Examine your own life.
Choose to wake up from the trance of who you think you are and experience the truth of who you really are.
Resolve not to go back into the trance by turning away from that essential experience of waking up.
Freshly inquire anew as thoughts or feelings of separation arise.

Gangaji's invitation is radical in part because it is not based upon a particular philosophy or religion. There are no prescribed practices or rituals, unless one considers self-inquiry or self-observation a practice. Most radically, it calls into question the very structure of who we've believed ourselves to be
.
    Who
you are is not separate from God or Love or Truth or Freedom or Peace or Silence, whatever one chooses to call it.
Therefore, there is nothing you have to do to 'get there.' No merit to be earned. Who you are is already here, has always been and will always be.

    The
invitation is to wake up and be Yourself.”
Gangaji. “Freedom and Resolve: Finding Your True Home in the Universe.” Hampton Roads, 2014.

Below, Gangaji reads & comments on a letter written to her:
Letter:    “I experience full being ecstasy when I see someone crack open, when the ‘aha’ shines from their face, when their tears leak the truth that has been bottled so long. I simultaneously experience the ‘aha,’ the tears, the nowness. I have experienced these moments in my own heart too. So many times now that it seems normal.
And it is this normalcy that I wonder about. When I stop, am I stopping too soon? I always have the feeling that there must be just one more hidden attachment or contraction to notice.”

Gangaji: “Well, that’s the hidden attachment. ‘There must be one more’ - that’s the hidden attachment.”

Letter:    “There must be one more hidden attachment to unburden my heart from. I am like a dog looking for that last morsel of food that rolled under the refrigerator out of reach, but well within smell.”

Gangaji: “So then, you’ve had the experience, you see the play of the mind, and then the play of the mind gives this ‘scent of more nourishment.’ That’s when, are you willing to stop, right there, to die? Because that’s what this is about."

Letter:    “Well, I just need to get a little more of something, so I don’t die in the stopping. I mean, I don’t want to stop until I have all my goods handled."

Gangaji: “So it has to do with ‘unburdening,’ and so forth. But you have to see it through the wiliness of the mind. It’s still a postponement of stopping. It’s still a postponement of death.
You can spend your whole life like that, having been graced with exquisite moments of truth, and then getting on with the business of accumulation.”

Letter:    “If I can just get that one last tidbit of untruth, then I can rest.”

Gangaji: “There is always more untruth. You get that one last tidbit, it’ll only make you hungry for the next last tidbit. Haven’t you had enough of the lies? Haven’t you had enough of untruth? When is the point when you say, 'Stop!'?
This is such a trap of the mind. This trap of the mind is psychological sophistication. ‘Well, I’m sure I have to clean up a little more. So best not to stop now.'
Stop and die. That’s what it’s about. Stop and die imperfect as you are, without any hope of being cleaned up and shiny, and presented to God as some pure vessel. Just as you are right now, you present yourself, fully, nakedly, with all your imperfections and no hope of cleaning them up, and see what welcomes that as you are, not as you will be, if you follow this little morsel, this stink under the refrigerator.

Letter:    “It just feels like, ‘There’s something I must be missing.’”

Gangaji: “You see, here we go. This is the rebirth now. So if it feels like that, feel like that fully and completely missing the boat. Missing it all. You are missing it. It’s true. When there’s this feeling, ‘I’m missing,’ – that’s right. That feeling is a Divine feeling.
But our tendency is to get rid of that feeling. So, we find one little bit of spiritual morsel, one little way to clean up the act a little better, so that we’ll be ready to stop next time.
If you are feeling that you are missing something, recognize I am missing something, and be that missing fully and completely. BE the pain of that, the horror of that, the self-betrayal of that, the lie of that, all the spiritual and psychological maneuvering around that is a way to escape that.
But as you can quite clearly see, you may sense or feel that you escape it in the moment, because you take the morsel and there’s some alleviation of the hunger. But it arises. It will haunt you until you meet it. And be glad it will haunt you until you meet it. Be glad that you haven’t fully learned how to deny. This is the pain of anything less than full self-recognition, and it is quite reliable.

Letter:    “I feel like I must be absolutely clean sometimes before I can present this who I amness to the world.”

Gangaji: “‘Who I amness’ is nothing! It’s not clean. It’s not dirty and it’s not clean. So when you are thinking I have to be absolutely cleaned before I can present this who amness to the world, you’re still thinking about this object called you. This is now me, as who amness! This is a big thought. The thought I amness. You are not who you think you are, whether that’s I am notness or I amness.

Letter:    “There seems to be a shadow and veil separating me from me.”

Gangaji: “Yes, it is. And that shadow and that veil, is this lie: ‘I am separated from me.’ That’s the shadow. That’s the veil. Dive into it and see how thick it is.

Letter:    “And I spend much of my time looking for confirmation of my separation in the world.

Gangaji: “That’s right. And you will find it.

Letter:    “Looking for a wink, or a twitch, or a glance that will confirm this doubt that I am not here yet.

Gangaji: “That’s right. ‘You’ aren’t here yet, because ‘you’ don’t exist. ‘You,’ who are thinking has to get somewhere, doesn’t exist. It’s a thought in your mind. It will never get there. It will never get there!
If you can appreciate the pain of that, the frustration of that, the absurdity of that, that you can die to that. (Fully process all of it physically
http://www.johnlovas.com/search?q=physical+processing)
It’s not about ‘you’ getting somewhere. It’s not about ‘you’ becoming clean or you becoming the I am that. That ‘you’ does not exist. It’s a thought. It’s made up. It’s illusion. Investigate it for yourself and see. That’s what self-inquiry is.
Rather than continuing this pursuit of satisfaction for this madeup you, now it’s like this. This messy image of me, I don’t like. I want this squeaky-clean image of me. They’re both just images – the clean and the messy. Both just images. Both made up in the mind to keep the mind entertained, spinning, weaving, moving, deflecting, imagining. ‘Stop’ has nothing to do with stop so that you get clean; stop so that you wake up.
Stop so that you can see that who you think you are, you are not! Stop so that you can see that when the thoughts of who you are stop, you remain! You don’t need thoughts of who you are to be, whether the latest thought is squeaky clean or filthy dirty. Neither are needed. You exist independently from any thought. No thought exists independently from you. Every thought needs you for its thought. But you exist independently of any thought.”

We're so STRONGLY identified with our small, narrow-minded personal and group stories (MY country, MY race, MY religion, MY dogmas, MY political party, MY skin color, etc) that we rarely if ever remember the infinitely wiser, greater spirit we actually are. Being trapped in any story is being confined to a small, cold, dark prison cell that we ourselves maintain by continuously engaging with self-talk.

STOP engaging repetitive, circular self-talk in your head. Learn to shift awareness to your heart center and live authentically - spacious, free, loving, nurturing, warm, peaceful.

All Paths to One Mountain Top

Basic meditation instructions usually guide us to de-armor mentally, emotionally & physically, to allow us to open up to ultimate reality. We do this by: Relaxing (letting go of efforting); Simply "being" (letting go of "doing mode" - trying to control everything) - allowing the belly to soften, allowing the heart area to soften, allowing the mind to open (transcending habitual thought loops, must haves & must avoids). Part of us (our heart / right hemisphere) clearly wants to open up to ultimate reality.
But another part of us (ego mind / left hemisphere) resists because we fear losing control & being overwhelmed by our shadow. This resistance is the main obstacle to peace & joy. Asking us to let go of our fearful avoidances, defensiveness & distractions is like asking a drowning person to let go of the scraps of wood they're hanging onto for dear life. We resist letting go as if our life depended on it. Our shadows are the scary-looking gargoyles "guarding" the entrance to holy places of transformation. Our usual "ordinary unhappiness" level of life does indeed depend on maintaining protective armoring; while our awakened life waits for us beyond this.
    One
way or another, awakening out of universal human suffering involves learning to approach (rather than avoid), accept (rather than reject), and actually befriend & become intimate with our own personal "darkness" or shadow. And the result is transformational.

“The process of unlocking your higher purpose is one of turning the authority of your mind over to your heart. This alone will transform your life.”
Richard Rudd “The Gene Keys. Embracing Your Higher Purpose.” Watkins, 2009.

Below, Richard Rudd's brief summary of his Gene Keys path towards Awakening :

"Through the Gene Keys ... I’ve looked at DNA through a poet’s eyes, because I’m essentially a poet (which) means I attempt to live a poetic life and I see things poetically. And to see things poetically is to see beauty basically, in as many places as you can, especially in ugly places.
And so we have to start by looking at the ugly places inside us, which in Gene Keys we call the shadow state. Everyone kind of knows these places. If you just close your eyes for a moment and think, ‘Where is the ugliest place inside me right now? Where’s the big challenge? What is it?’ And you know what it is, where it is, instantly. Somewhere something that you’re grappling with that is a grain in the oyster - that shadow pattern, which you are attempting to resolve, or trying to distract yourself from.

IF you give it space inside your being, IF you give it time, IF you allow it some compassion, IF you treat yourself gently, IF you watch it, IF you bring mindfulness & awareness to it, you will see it begin to transform. That’s the case with any shadow pattern, any victim pattern that we are playing out, going round-and-round in circles in the samsara loop.
You have to recognize that this is the point of meditation, the point of contemplation. Contemplation is the word / technique I use, because it doesn’t necessarily involve closing our eyes – you can create the contemplative state, while doing absolutely anything in your daily life, and so through the art of contemplation, I teach how to bring that state, that interior awareness, into everything in your life, beginning by taking little pauses throughout your day so that you can begin to create that space. Lots of little pauses, interconnected, starts to create quite a lot of space, and it also creates more time throughout your day, which is an irony really, because you’re pausing, so you might think that you’re losing time, but actually you’re pumping time into your day. It’s a strange paradox, because you’re stopping, pausing. When I say pause, you can still be in motion. You’re pausing in your mind loops, in your struggles, your old patterns, so that you can see them clearly. And you’re creating space, compassion & gentleness around them.

That begins to create this ... kind of flower which begins to open out of the shadow, out of the very thing that you’ve been avoiding, ends up being this great gift.

So in the Gene Keys are all 3 levels: the seed is the shadow; the flower is the gift that’s hidden in the seed & the shadow – every shadow, every difficulty in life is really asking us to do some alchemy. There’s something powerful in that. The most difficult thing in your life has the most potential if you have the courage to give it some space, and really look at it. You have to be authentic, so honest with yourself. That’s a process, and you might need support as well.
    And
then the final aspect is the siddhi – a Sanskrit word, you could say Divine Essence, Divine Treasure. It’s the genetic enlightened expression of a specific part of your nature. So everyone, when they become fully awake, has a completely different expression. So when you look at the Gene Keys, there are 64 of them, and you look down the line of the language for the siddhis, you see all these words for compassion, rapture, ecstasy, perfection, beauty, humility … they’re all describing the same state, but through a slightly different lens. So understanding that every shadow contains one of those siddhis inside it, it’s hidden in there, it’s the fruit, in the seed. And you might think it's a long way away – the seed is tiny, and it’s going to grow into a tree, and it’s going to have to go through all this, and then you get this beautiful fruit, and the fruit of course contains another seed, which is a beautiful metaphor in itself. But that is in there, and that metaphor is life.

All you have to do, is create that contemplative space inside you, those pauses, so you can begin to look at these difficult patterns. That’s all the ancients actually ever taught. Now we can go off into quantum realities and describe it all ((as Robert Grant does in the earlier part of this interview)), but actually, it comes down to just that, just that mindfulness, just that spaciousness, so that the pattern has space to transform, and then it can transform really quickly as well. You can go from a seed to a tree really fast because awareness is the water, the nutrition & the nourishment that allows that whole process to happen, and then you’re left with this fruit, the juicy ecstasy of biting into this mango, or whatever your favourite fruit is.
    And
it was there all along, that golden thread, that golden awareness, that awakening. It was there all along. It was in the numbers, it was just hidden in the thread, in the stream, and we just had to unlock it. And that’s what the Gene Keys are. And that’s what the Keys of Enoch were. And that’s what all these ancient teachings are about – the I Ching, Shakras, and the Vedic systems, the Kerala system, all the systems. You get to see the same golden thread in every single one, but just in a totally different way. Look at the Sufis in the Middle-Eastern deserts, they had more words for love than any other tradition. Like the Eskimos have different words for snow, the Sufis had different words for love – just layers and layers of different words to describe different aspects of love, because that’s all they wanted to see was love. There’s love that’s full of angst, desire & misery, but it’s still love. And then there’s love that’s at the highest level of divine annihilation and oneness with the cosmos – that’s also love. So it’s all about love ultimately. It begins with self-love.
So creating space in your life through a contemplative practice, and I would say ultimately learning to be gentle with yourself is the greatest secret I’ve ever learned.
And I learned one day ... what awakening is ... It’s a series of softenings. That went into me so deep. Wow. You just have to go on softening your heart, and then the mind opens, and everything begins to just kind of transform. And then those higher states are just there, are revealed, they’re underneath.

Awakening to Awareness

As we consciously experience - even briefly - un-caused joy, freedom, profound peace, silence & stillness, we start to recognize the validity of our intuitions about, and start sensing & resting in our unconditioned, essence identity - "our original face, before our parents were born." Then we become able to take our form identity (name, age, occupation etc) and associated regrets, fears, anxieties and other neuroses much more lightly.
    Those
who have experienced this SHIFT describe it as "the greatest thing to happen to you in this lifetime." Below is Eckhart Tolle's wise guidance to help you experience this shift for yourself :

“Just enjoy the flow - the comings and goings, gain & loss, hot & cold.* So these are all forms that arise in your experience, and you experience yourself as a form. You experience yourself as a physical form and as a person. The larger part of who you are, is of course, not visible. Only the physical body is visible. And as you know, there’s more to you than meets the eye – all your inner space, thoughts, feelings, emotions. And even the way in which you experience your body is an inner phenomenon. But even that inner self is still form on that level, consisting of mental activity – thoughts, emotions & perceptions. And that also is subject to, of course, impermanence. The physical body changes. With some people it’s very noticeable. With some people you might have noticed it if you look at a photo of when they were 20 years old, and then look at a photo when they were 40, or you look at a photo when they were 30, and then a photo when they were 50 or 60. Sometimes they are hardly recognizable. The entire shape of their face has changed, not to mention the rest of the body. So all is subject to the fleetingness of things. Form, whether they are inner forms or outer forms, thought forms, sense perceptions, or physical objects - which can only be experienced as sense perceptions, so all external phenomena are really inner phenomena. So you a self, the person who you are for a little while, are subject to change, and eventually also, sooner or later it disappears. One day you’re here, the next day you’re gone.
*((The Buddha taught that pleasure & pain, gain & loss, praise & blame, fame & disrepute {the “eight worldly winds”} are constantly arising and passing away, beyond our control. We suffer when we cling to pleasure, gain, praise, & fame and expect them to be always present.))

Is there anything beyond that? That’s the question that has been asked by spiritual seekers for thousands of years. And of course there is. But just believing that there is a transcendent realm that is not subject to time & decay, well believing in that as an article of faith might serve as a little crutch in your life. It can give you a comforting thought, similar to the thought of ‘there is a God.’ It’s a comforting thought but it does not really help you experience the reality of it. It’s still just a belief, and of course as a belief, you might be wrong.

In ‘The Power of Now’ I used the term ‘form identity’ and ‘essence identity,’ referring to the human being. So you know a lot about your form identity, which changes, and is not going to last. Even if it lasts – if an aspect of your form identity lasts beyond your physical existence, that will also be subject to change as a form, because no forms are permanent. So if there is life after death, you’re not going to be Mr. So-and-so or Mrs. So-and-so – your personal identity, for the rest of eternity. Of course, all forms are subject to metamorphosis, change
& transformation. So who you experience to be on the level of your form identity is temporary. Even if it’s continuous for a while beyond the physical form, that is also temporary. And then it shifts, changes, and dissolves. But as physicists tell us, energy itself remains. It changes form.

There’s an essence to life that is formless, and that can be known, not as an object in your experience, but as the very subject of all experience. And that is who you are in your essence. And who you are in your essence is identical with what the universe is in its essence.
And it is the realization of your essence identity that frees you from unhealthy, compulsive, obsessive attachment to your form identity, and all the things that make up the forms in your life, the objects around you, and so on.
If you don’t know who you are on the essence level, then there is a clinging to the world of form that is unhealthy. And by that I mean it creates suffering. Because if you cling to something, that by its very nature is fleeting, and deep down you know that, there’s suffering even while you still have it, not only when it finally dissolves, decays or leaves you. Even while you still have whatever you are clinging to, there’s already that anxiety and that nervousness in the background.
Form identity, essence identity. Essence identity is not something that arises in your experience because it is the foundation of all experience. I sometimes call it ‘inner space.’ It is known not in a subject-object relationship, but it knows – let’s put it like that – you know it as yourself when the mind subsides for a moment, thought activity ceases, like now, and all that’s left is a sense of presence. It has no content. From the point of view of form or form identity, it is nothing. And yet, undoubtably, there is a presence there, a knowingness – an awareness, not of something – just awareness without the ‘of.’

To use an analogy, let’s say you are a ray of light. And usually, the light shines on things. It shines on something, and you know it, because the light shines on something. If the light doesn’t shine on something, you can’t see it. In order to see light, there needs to be a reflection. So let’s say you are the light. And suddenly you realize your essential nature as light, and not what you thought before; you took yourself to be whatever the light reflects. So it’s a shift in the direction of your attention one could say; instead of going continuously either outward to a sensory experience, or to thought experience – involved in one thought or another – and your attention is drawn into that, and it has a hypnotic quality. Most people are completely hypnotized by their thoughts – ‘in the grip’ of their thoughts, and their attention follows thoughts wherever thoughts go.
And then suddenly, there’s a reversal of attention, like now, this is why we’re here. Then you become aware of yourself, but not as a form. As the very consciousness without which, there would be no experience of any form. And it has no features. That’s why the Buddha sometimes called it ‘Emptiness.’ In other Buddhist traditions, ‘Buddha nature’* is another term. And that of course is essence identity. That is your Buddha nature, or Christ consciousness, whatever you want to call it.
*((Buddha nature refers to the understanding that the natural and true state of the mind, which is pure, undefiled by afflictions, is inherently present in every sentient being, and is eternal and unchanging. It will shine forth … when the nature of mind is recognized for what it is.))

So the greatest realization, the greatest thing to happen to you in this lifetime is the realization that there is this transcendent dimension in the background of your life. And you have it there, at first as glimpses, then sometimes that realization stays for a while. I sometimes describe it as a stillness in the background while your life unfolds in the foreground. And you become aware of more spaces arising in between thoughts, more stillness arising, more presence, more peace.
And then you realize that, essentially, who you are is not what happens in your mind or what happens externally – these do not define who you are in your essence. Losing your job, or getting the great job, or the house or whatever it is, whether you get it, or you lose it - all this is the constant shifting of forms. If you look to that for your real sense of identity, then you’re going to find a lot of trouble in your life. You will be troubled continuously.
But if you realize yourself as that alive stillness, spaciousness, then you can enjoy the world of form. And if you can’t enjoy it – sometimes perhaps you can’t – you can at least tolerate it with a sense of peacefulness in the background, knowing that it’s not going to last. You can accept whatever is right now. It may change in the next moment, or in a year, or in 10 years, but in the meantime, this is what is. Or you can take action to change it. But even then, in the meantime, it is. At some point the situation changes. Either the change is brought about by your action, or it just comes. It’s in the nature of things. But in the meantime, you lived in alignment with the ‘is-ness’ of the present moment
.
    If
you make THIS your spiritual practice - becoming one with the ‘is-ness’ of this moment - then the transcendent dimension, your essence identity, reveals itself as a peace in the background.

So it’s the acceptance of whatever form arises in the present moment. Forms change, a succession of forms arise, and it’s all in the now. And you let go of dysfunctional mind patterns like, ‘This shouldn’t be happening.’ But it is. Of course you can change it. But the change that comes from a state of peace, which is power. So the real powerful change also resides in knowing yourself as the essence that is deeper than whatever arises. And when you accept whatever arises, then that spaciousness opens up inside of you. That is your essence identity. And as that spaciousness or your essence identity opens up, more intelligence becomes accessible to you – let’s say, the you that is the form identity – your conditioned mind, that form, that personal you - more intelligence flows into that form. And whatever that form does, becomes more effective, and is ‘right action,’* to use a Buddhist term. And you don’t take action when it’s futile, when you see it’s pointless.

*((Right Action according to the Buddha includes: 1) do not harm others 2) do not cheat, steal or be dishonest and 3) avoid sexual misconduct and to help others to live a life of similar values.))

Also, as that spacious essence identity opens up, creativity arises, which means your thinking becomes more interesting, more original. You occasionally or quite often have an interesting idea or a way of looking at things, or some insight, or the realization of what it is that you want to do. And it’s no longer the you that is the form identity that is totally ignorant of essence. There is a deeper flow from the depths of who you are, and any action you take reflects that depth – it’s no longer egoic. So if the impulse then comes as some insight out of the stillness, ‘Oh, this is what I want to do. I want to create this organization.’ When it comes from the deeper level, it’s no longer self-serving, it’s not in order to enhance your sense of who are in the eyes of others or your own eyes. Then it will be something that serves the greater good, that is connected with the totality.

So where is your essence identity? It’s here and now. As you become aware of your essential beingness, presence, as thinking subsides and awareness remains, that’s who you are. And suddenly, you are liberated from what otherwise would be an obnoxious person. Because anybody who does not realize their essential identity creates some form of unhappiness for themselves and others, because their sense of who they are is ultimately delusional. And a deluded person creates circumstances, an environment, and a reality that reflects that delusion.

And many people, even if they have never come into contact with any spiritual teaching, have some limited access to their essence identity, without even knowing it. But they experience it as an occasional peace, or joy, or aliveness, or happiness without a cause. And then if you look at the scale of unhappiness, the fewer glimpses you have of the underlying essence of who you are, the more unhappy you get. And not only unhappy, some people also become violent perpetrators. So these are extreme forms of the same delusion. And then they believe that by killing certain people, they will have enhanced their own self, in whatever way they express it.

But glimpses are not enough. We are here because a new shift is happening – a shift of consciousness. And the nature of that shift is that the person’s essence identity or the transcendent dimension arises more fully than before, so that it replaces or dissolves the delusion. And that’s why we sometimes call it ‘waking up’ and ‘spiritual awakening’ not as a one-off high that you then have to think about – ‘Oh, five years ago I had this great high for two days, or an hour, or a week.’ That’s fine if you had it, that’s fine. It’s arising, and then you can invite it into your life.
Instead of trying to remember it, invite it back into your life right now by: aligning yourself with the present moment, accepting what is, becoming friendly with what is - your surroundings, the people who happen to be around you. You stop complaining in your mind or out loud, and the spaciousness opens up. And then, you know who you are, no longer through any kind of mind activity, not through any thought that tells you something about who you are. You know who you are through the direct realization of presence. No longer through any kind of judgment in your mind, good or bad; any kind of comparison, which is otherwise, if you are trapped in your form identity, you have to compare yourself to others. And then you have to figure out who you are in relation to those – better than, not as good as – ‘My body is better than his, not as good as.’ My money, my position, my body, my looks, the way I dress, my family background, whatever, my country. All these things have a certain temporary reality, in the same way that a dream has a temporary reality. And that’s fine. You can acknowledge that.
But it is a wonderful liberation to realize who you are without any thought that says something about yourself. It’s only there that actually you can realize your essence identity, because there is no thinking in it – there’s only awareness - you are that. That’s liberation.

You don’t depend on the ups & downs of whatever happens in your life to tell you who you are. Isn’t that liberating? Or whether you ride on a bus or in a Rolls-Royce, doesn’t make any difference anymore to who you are. Or if you’re in a Rolls-Royce today, and suddenly next week you lose it all and you’re on a bus, do you become unhappy on the bus? Or if you’re on the bicycle are you unhappy because other people are in their big cars? Either you say, ‘I’m not as good as they are’ or you tell yourself another story in your mind that gives you an identity that says, ‘I’m so superior to these people in their big cars, because I’m too spiritual, I don’t need these big cars. Or, ‘They’re all evil. They’re all polluting the planet. And I’m the one who is not evil.’ Whatever story you tell yourself in your mind to give you an identity. And it usually involves comparison and involves putting others down and/or elevating yourself in some way above others, even if it’s in your misery. If you can’t be better than others, you can be more miserable. Oh, that’s great. And somebody then complains about how they have aches and pains in their body, you can say, ‘You have aches and pains? I’ve had aches and pains far worse than yours.’ That can give you an identity too. It’s all pseudo identity. It all consists of something you tell yourself in your head. And people come up with the most absurd stories in their head. And sometimes they do the most absurd things to strengthen that absurd story. Sometimes they become violent to strengthen that absurd story they’re telling themselves in their head. And sometimes, millions of people do it together - they have a collective story. It’s mad.

Who you are is beyond any story. And part of this waking up process – ‘process’ means it’s not continuous. You wake up, you go back into sleep, so to speak, you wake up … And gradually, the wakefulness arises more. And then it’s there and becomes the very foundation of your life. It always has been – consciousness has always been the very foundation of your life, but you didn’t know it. If you don’t know it, it's almost as if you didn’t have it.
That’s why I use the somewhat limited analogy of having $100 million in a secret bank account in Switzerland, but you don’t know it, so you sit there and beg, ‘Can you spare a dime?’ You don’t know the wealth, the richness, ‘the fullness of life’ as Jesus called it.
This is the fullness of life – it is life itself, the realization of life prior to life becoming life forms. You are life, which is synonymous with consciousness.
